All Eyes on Tesla’s Q3 Earnings: Will Financials Match Autonomous Ambitions?

Tesla’s “We, Robot” event on October 10 was intended to spotlight the company’s future in autonomous transportation, with the unveiling of the Cybercab robotaxi and the Robovan. Both products were designed to disrupt urban mobility and logistics, while showcasing Tesla's ambition to transition into a service-based revenue model. However, the presentation left shareholders and analysts with more questions than answers…

With Tesla’s Q3 earnings call around the corner, investors are closely monitoring the company's financials for any signs that its ambitious plans are on track.

Tesla has long pitched autonomy as a transformative growth opportunity, promising to convert its vehicles into self-driving robotaxis that could revolutionize transportation. Elon Musk reiterated these goals at the event, projecting Cybercab production by 2027 and rollout of unsupervised autonomous services in select markets like California and Texas by 2026. Yet, the lack of clear regulatory timelines and the absence of Tesla’s promised affordable EV model during the event have created uncertainty around these projections.

The upcoming earnings call will be critical, not only to assess Tesla’s Q3 performance but also to gauge the company’s progress in autonomous vehicle development.

The Cybercab and Robovan: Tesla’s Play for the Autonomous Market

Tesla’s Robotaxi also know as the Cybercab, a futuristic vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals, was unveiled as part of the company’s long-promised robotaxi fleet. With a target price under $30,000, the vehicle aims to disrupt the ridesharing industry by reducing operating costs to US$0.20 per mile.

Additionally, the Robovan, designed to transport up to 20 passengers or cargo, reflects Tesla’s push into high-capacity transport markets.

While these innovations suggest exciting possibilities, their impact will depend heavily on production timelines and Tesla’s ability to navigate regulatory hurdles. Musk has stated that initial operations will focus on regions like Texas and California by 2026, but analysts remain skeptical given Tesla’s history of delayed timelines.

What’s Next for Tesla?

Looking ahead, Tesla has quite a lot on its plate… The upcoming earning report on 23 Oct might just set the stage for what’s next. Investors will be watching closely for updates on Tesla’s delivery numbers, profit margins and any other hints about their new products such as Cybertruck and Semi.

A key concern is whether Tesla’s ambitious robotaxi strategy will affect near-term profitability, while Tesla aims to shift from a traditional sales model to recurring revenue though Robotaxi services, the lack of clarity on regulatory approvals creates significant risks.

With the ramp up of Gigafactories in China and Germany, any news on production growth in these key regions could give us clues about Tesla’s global ambitions. If Tesla can hit its production targets and keep up with growing demand, it could strengthen its foothold in the competitive EV market.

Apart from cars, Tesla is making moves in battery tech, energy storage, and even autonomous driving. Advancements in Full Self-Driving could be a game-changer, and updates on Tesla’s Powerwall and Megapack products might signal growth beyond vehicles. Not forgetting, Tesla’s sustainability efforts, which are a big draw for ESG-conscious investors.

Between expanding product lines and potential competition from other EV players, it’ll be interesting to see how Tesla navigates the road ahead. With all these developments, there’s certainly a lot to keep an eye on!

Opportunities and Risks for Tesla Investors

Opportunities:

  • New Revenue Streams: If Tesla can successfully deploy robotaxis, it could unlock significant recurring revenue. The ability to eliminate driver costs could also position Tesla competitively in the ridesharing market

  • Manufacturing Efficiency: Tesla’s established production capabilities will likely help reduce costs for the Cybercab, allowing it to price competitively and drive adoption

Risks

  • Regulatory and Competitive Challenges: The company must navigate complex regulatory environments, while facing competition from Waymo and Cruise, which are already operating autonomous fleets in major U.S. cities

  • Economic Viability: There are concerns that Tesla’s Cybercab may not achieve the promised cost efficiencies. If customers find it more economical to own Tesla vehicles rather than rely on robotaxi services, Tesla’s long-term profitability could be impacted

Tesla (TradingView)

  • Price has recently approached 260 - 265 resistance level before sellers took control and pushed price back down

  • 100d MA has also crossed above the 200d MA in Sep which has bullish implications to the trend

  • However, 200d MA is still heading sideway and has yet to head upwards, indicating a potential sideway longer-term trend still in play within the range of 195 - 265

  • Immediate support and resistance levels to note are around 195 - 200 and 230 respectively

  • As earnings results & company’s forecast will be announced on 23 Oct after market close, it could be a catalyst for the subsequent price action

    • If buying pressure return with price recapturing the 230 level, potential upside towards 265 first

    • If market sentiment is negative towards the announcement, we may potentially see more weakness towards 195 where buyers could return

For now, Tesla remains a high-risk, high-reward investment. The path to profitability through robotaxis is fraught with challenges, but if Tesla succeeds, it could redefine urban mobility and unlock new growth avenues for shareholders.
